Hard-shell kayaks:
Attachment is by straps. No drilling into your kayak required. One-hand steering by a steering oar that we provide (pivots on a pivot point behind the skipper, using a clamping oarlock that we provide). Your kayak does not have to have a rudder to use our rigs. Order item 6004 below . Kit includes leeboards (to enable you to sail across the wind and upwind), stabilizer floats (to prevent capsizing), sail, mast, boom, ropes, frame, straps, steering oar, oarpin, instructions and how-to-sail manual. The floats on the kayak sail kits with stabilizers can be upgraded to our new "Hydrodynamic" style stabilizer for $99 additional.

Hydro-Dynamic Stabilizer Floats & Arms (without the crossbar the arms slide into) Longer and more streamlined than the foam floats, but otherwise the same idea. These are pontoons on telescoping arms that can be added to most of our sail rigs to help prevent capsizing. The foam floats are lighter and shorter and priced lower. So, they are more portable and more affordable. If you think of stabilizer floats as insurance, and you don't intend to drag them through the water, but instead plan to have them above the water ready to catch you if you start to tip, then you don't care about drag. But if you are going to be leaning over enough to have a float in the water while moving, then these hydro-dynamic floats will cause less drag and are worth the extra $99. Inflatable stabilizer floats and arms Rugged, yet more portable than our other stabilizer floats because they deflate. Very puncture resistant and they inflate quickly and easily with just a few puffs by mouth -- no need to carry a pump. They have one-way valves, so blow in as hard as you can to top them off and then take your time screwing the cap on. The one-way valves will keep the air from rushing back out and since they can take all the pressure your lungs can give them, you can inflate them hard. They have dual side-by-side mounting rings that attach them to their aluminum arms, so they are firmly held pointing straight ahead. This item is not designed with the up/down adjustment. This item is just floats and arms for adding to a sail kit, rowing setup, or other product that already has crossbar for them to slide into. See next item if you want that up/down adjusting inflatable floats. For sailing, you use floats in all-the-way-up position anyway, so if that's the intended use of your stabilizers, you don't need up/down adjustment. Sliding leeboard mounts (Pair) Allows you to adjust position of leeboards on our kayak, and inflatable boat sail kits (excluding kits for Pakboat, SVX200 & similar, where mast position is adjustable instead). Following the instructions provided, you will be able to fine-tune your rig for the combination of hull, sail, sailing conditions and preferences you have. Farther forward gives slightly better upwind performance. Farther back (up to a point) gives less drag and less effort on steering oar to hold course going straight ahead. Too far back gives control problems. Adjustable positioning allows you to adapt rig to wider variety of boats, and to your desired handling characteristics. The inflatable rig and the kayak rig work on rigid canoes if you get sliding leeboard mounts and 2 pair of gunwale clamps. (Canoes need the leeboards farther forward than the standard fixed position for kayaks and inflatables). Changing leeboard position with these sliding mounts requires no tools and can be done in a few seconds provided you aren't also trying to sail the boat at the same time. Do on shore or let your passenger do it for you, so you are not distracted from your duties as skipper!
Electric Air Pump - Power Inflator 12V DC works off car cigarette lighter We tested many inflators before choosing 2 to sell. This is the quietest one we tested. Plugs into cigarette lighter. Has hose and adaptors for different size valves. Will inflate 11' Super Caravelle or Mariner in about 10 minutes. You don't have to hold it, so while main chambers are filling, you can be getting the rest of your gear arranged. A few puffs by mouth required to top off each chamber. You can do these puffs into the end of the hose (it detaches from pump), so you don't have to pucker up right against the boat. If you want option for cordless operation, get item 2016 instead. However, only this pump can be reversed to help deflate the boat. Squeeze most of the air out by rolling or folding, then suck the rest out using this pump to get your boat as small as possible for convenient transporting and storage. For deflation, you do have to hold the hose in the boat's orifice and block leakage around the hose with your hand, but this is easily and quickly done and the deflation function is very effective.
14-foot Inflatable Sailing Kayak -- Our Fastest Inflatable Sailboat - Sevylor SVX200DS & our sail rig Fast, nimble, rugged, stiff and portable -- that's our 14-foot (13' 8") inflatable sailing kayak. The hull is a Sevylor SVX 200DS (164" long x 34" beam) River X K2 Kayak . We've designed a special sail rig for it, that leaves most of the hull unencumbered by any metal parts, so you can sit on the sides, lean over the windward side to hike out, or paddle without interference from the sail rig. Book On Learning To Sail -- Jim's Favorite We've read them all (almost) and this is the best "How-To-Sail-For- Beginners" type book out there. It's the one used by the Annapolis Sailing School. It's got one female author and one male author, so both halves of our species were represented in its creation, which for a "how-to" book is a good thing.
Jim Luckett says: "It's clear, well written, well illustrated, and correct."
We do provide "How To Sail" instructions (written and illustrated by Jim himself) with our sail kits, plans, and sailboats, but if you like to have things explained 2 different ways to help make them stick, read this book too. Paperback.
Lightweight, high quality kayak paddle (#20205) Weight matters a lot for how quickly you tire when paddling. That's why we love this 34-oz. kayak paddle. Length is 230 centimeters (about 7 1/2 feet). Stiff yet light. Blade is 16" x 6" asymetrical spoon. Drip rings. Shaft is black aluminum, 1 1/8" diameter. Blades are white nylon (glass reinforced). Shaft comes apart in middle . Worth the extra money if arm, back or shoulder fatigue is a potential issue for you.
Sail Kit for Pakboats SailboatsToGo folding portable sail kit for Pakboats. Video Link. This is the sail kit only (no boat, no stabilizer floats). Pakboats are a line of folding canoes and kayaks with interior aluminum frame, non-inflatable PVC skin, and inflatable tubes between the frame and skin. Under sail, they're fast and go great to windward. If you're skeptical of inflatables, but want extreme portability, this may be the boat for you. The sail kit includes everything you need to "sailboatize" a pakboat: sail, mast, leeboards, steering oar, framework to hold it all together and clamps to clamp it to the pakboat. Pakboat Puffin II folding kayak with deluxe sail kit An open folding kayak for 2 people with our deluxe sail kit (see description for item #3026 for what this includes). This is a complete sailboat in two duffel bags. The kayak (you could call it a canoe) weighs just 28 lbs, yet has a capacity of 2 persons/400 lbs and a length of 14 feet. Kayak assembles in about 20 minutes (twice that the first few times); similar for the sail kit. We're excited about the speed, portability and upwind sailing ability of this sailboat. The kayak is a non-inflatable PVC skin over and aluminum tubing frame. Between the frame and the skin are 2 inflatable tubes on each side, for safety and to tighten the skin. Sail 45 sq ft dacron Custom made 45 SF sail in Dacron fits Snark, SailboatsToGo, Spring Creek and Sea Eagle boats. Excellent workmanship and high quality materials. Dacron is theoretically more efficient at converting wind to boat-moving power than any other fabric, but we don't see a measurable difference in a head-to-head race with our standard nylon sail. These are made after they are ordered, so allow about 3 to 6 weeks. Wide choice of colors (Red, white, 3 shades of blue, turquoise, green, yellow, 2 shades of orange, purple, gold, black, gray, tanbark, pink) and the 4 panels of the sail can be different. Not returnable unless defective. If you want this sail INSTEAD of the standard sail in a sail kit or sailboat you are ordering today, choose item 5017 instead. Item 5017 is for substitutions (upgrading something you are buying today). This item is for buying the sail on its own (not as a substitute). Sail color page .
Bigger Sail Upgrade -- 55 square foot nylon sail, heavy duty mast, spar extension Select this item to DELETE the 45-square-foot sail from your order of a sail rig or complete sailboat and SUBSTITUTE a 55-square-foot nylon sail. Includes spar extension to carry the larger sail, plus sail, plus free upgrade to heavy duty mast. Bigger sail provides more speed in light to moderate winds (5-12 mph). This price is only for substitution. If you are not ordering something that normally includes a 45 sf sail, you must use item 5012 instead for this item.

Heavy duty mast upgrade Twice as strong on the bottom half of the mast, so you can keep the sail up high even in stronger winds. With the standard mast, when the white caps appear, it's time to lower the sail a foot to reduce strain on the mast. Only a pound heavier. Still fits in the optional rig bag. Not shock-corded. Pieces lock together with spring button instead. This price is to substitute this mast for the standard mast when ordering a rig. Don't put this in your shopping cart if you are getting it free with upgrade to 55 SF nylon sail. Just email jim@sailboatstogo.com to say you want the free upgrade in that case.
Upgrade Sail to Dacron 45 SF -- allow 3 to 6 weeks for delivery Order this item to delete the nylon sail from your sail rig order and substitute a 45 SF dacron sail. Made to order so you choose the color or colors. Dacron marginally outperforms the standard nylon sail in terms of power & upwind sailing ability, but we don't really see much performance difference in our test. This is offered for the real sailing enthusiast who is willing to pay extra for a extra quality and a wide choice of colors. Sail color page .
Upgrade Stabilizer Floats to Hydro-Dynamic Adding this item to your cart will upgrade the floats on a sail kit or stabilizer system that is already in your shopping cart from foam floats to hydo-dynamic floats. Hydo-dynamic floats are longer and more streamlined than the standard foam floats. So, they cause less drag when going through the water. They are also stronger in their ability to stay pointed straight ahead despite the forces exerted against them by motoring or hard sailing. Users who keep their floats out of the water when moving most of the time, so drag is not a consideration for them, should not spend the extra money to upgrade. Steering Oar & Oarpin Flat-bladed 7' oar with clamp-on oarpin. Use with our sail kits and canoe rowing attachment. Sail kits come with one, but you may like to have a second one. It's very convenient, when sailing, to have steering oars on both sides. You don't use them both at once for steering, but it allows you to steer with either hand without having to shift the steering oar from side to side.
55 Sq. Ft. Nylon Sail and Spar Extension Go faster when the winds are not strong. This yellow & white 55 SF sail fits any of our sailboats or sail rigs, by adding a spar extension (included with sail). Heavy duty mast is highly recommended with this sail, unless you are sure your winds will always be light. If you want to substitute this sail for the standard sail on something you are ordering today, then order item 5011 instead. Item 5011 is for upgrading. This item is for buying the sail on its own.
Heavy duty mast Heavy duty mast fits our sailboats and sail rigs, Spring Creek and Sea Eagle Paddleski. Bottom section (which takes most strain) is twice as strong as standard mast. Use this item to buy the mast not as an upgrade.
Use item 5016 instead to upgrade the mast on a sailboat or sail rig you are ordering today. (Note: Mast upgrade is free is you also select item 5011, upgrade to larger sail, and select the nylon sail option).

4 Rubber expansion nuts (well nuts) - Makes installation easy on sit-op-tops Rubber insert with brass female thread allows bolt-on installation even when you can't get to the back side to hold a nut. Rubber nut works kind of like a "molly" or "screw plug" hollow wall anchor you might use in your house to hang a picture or a shelf bracket. Auto makers use them to mount luggage racks, so you know they are strong! Just drill hole, insert rubber nut (rubber collar keeps it from falling through and seals hole), and screw in your bolt. As you tighten, rubber shaft on inside scrunches up so rubber nut resists pulling out and holds your accessory firmly. Set of 4. If you will be sailing in conditions that drive the stabilizers hard into the water and fast through the water, consider one of the float upgrades: inflatable floats (item 1014 ), hydrodynamic floats (item 5028 $99) or adding float braces for foam floats (item 6006). The hydrodynamic floats offer less drag, more strength. The inflatable floats (item 1014) can also take the strain of hard sailing and are more portable, but not as streamlined as the hydrodynamic. The braces for the foam floats give the foam floats the necessary strength to withstand hard sailing. The additional shiping cost to UK, Western Europe, Japan is item 1999 (with foam or hydrodynamic stabilizers) or item 6009 (with inflatable stabilizers).
Bag for sail rigs - big & heavy duty Big enough for the canoe or kayak rig including the foam stabilizer floats, with a handy pouch compartment for small parts. Also good for the inflatable boat rig. Heavily padded shoulder strap and suitcase-type handle. Strong fabric and strong zipper. Get it for the inflatable boat sail rig even if you don't get stabilizers, so you'll have extra room for a towel and a life jacket and a few other odds and ends. Although it's too big for the airline free baggage allowance, they will usually make an exception for sporting equipment like golf clubs (which this looks like) or wind surfing equipment, so why not this?
Braces for foam floats If you sail or motor with foam floats pressed hard on the water and moving fast in the water, the foam floats may eventually develop some play between the float and the vertical tube it is mounted on. A pair of these braces will help keep the foam floats pointed straight ahead, preventing that play from developing, or correcting it if it has already developed. Not needed with hydrodynamic floats nor with foam floats in moderate use. Braces may only be used with floats in up position but floats are easily released from braces to go into down position.
Kayakamaran sail rig Harness two kayaks into this rig and you've got a kayakamaran -- a catamaran based on kayak hulls. Very stable, so stabilizer floats not included.
Sail with hard shell or inflatable kayaks, or one of each. A Sevylor k79 kayak is about $100 (order separately).
If you add stabilizer floats to your order($134 additional for foam type or $233 for hydrodynamic type), then a subset of parts from this rig plus the stabilizers equals one kayak sail rig. So you will have both options.

Kayak/dinghy sail rig, no stabilizers Like item 6004 kayak sail rig, but without the stabilizer floats. There are a few kayaks that are wide enough, with flatish bottoms, so that they can be sailed without stabilizer floats if you have reasonable skill and some tolerance for capsize risk. This is also the sail rig for dinghies that can't use item 2001 or 2009 because they lack the right attachment points on the stern. Regarding kayaks: A flat-bottomed hull, combined with some weight up front (a passenger, or some inanimate ballast like a sandbag or water bag) can provide a lot of stability. If later you find you want the floats, it's easy enough to add them -- the float arms just slide right into the front crossbar and lock in place with spring buttons. Regarding dinghies: This is just like item 2001, except this rig has additional sections that extend the side rails so they reach all the way to the rear crossbar and attach to it, stabilizing it so that it doesn't depend on having motor mount fittings or a stern handle to attach itself to. Regarding both: Email us describing your boat after purchase so we can give you the right width for front crossbar.

Kayak Upwind Sail Kit for Pathfinder II, Advanced Element StraitEdge 2, Convertible 2 and similar Complete sail kit, not including stabilizer floats and arms. If you're daring, and your kayak is rigid enough, you can sail without stabilizer floats. But most people will want to add a pair of stabilzer floats and outrigger arms. (Hydrodynamic stabilizers for most speed, item 1006; inflatable for most portability, item 1022; foam for least cost item 1002). We sailed the Pathfinder II and the StraitEdge 2 successfully without stabilizers, but it was hairy! Reduced length of side rails (as compared to our item 6004 kit) leaves kayak sides more unencumbered. Great for easy entry and exit, paddling, and sitting up on side tube hiking out. But this open-sided design requires a degree of rigidity in the kayak and some attachment points along the sides that some kayaks don't have.
